About Brian

  • Brian Murray

Hailing from Blessington, Wicklow, Brian Murray has carved a niche as a distinguished entomologist, deeply rooted in the natural wonders of Ireland. His journey began in childhood, with a keen eye for nature's intricate beauties, leading him to the fascinating world of native Irish bees and wasps.

Brian's contributions are marked by significant discoveries, including the first Irish sighting of the European potter wasp, Euodynerus dantici, in 2021, and two records of the rare Black-headed Velvet Ant (Myrmosa atra subsp. erythrocephala) in 2023 – a species scarcely recorded since the early 20th century.

More recently, he discovered a new species of harvestman to the country with the presence of Leiobunum species A, in large numbers in Kildare.

Some of his work, supported by two NPWS Small Recorder Grants, has not only advanced scientific knowledge but also fostered community engagement through initiatives like the 2022 Bee Identification Workshop and a comprehensive survey of Glending Wood's stinging bees and wasps in 2023.

Beyond bees and wasps, Brian's expertise extends to a diverse array of invertebrates, including woodlice, harvestmen, worms, flies, beetles, dragonflies, butterflies and moths, showcasing his versatility as a researcher. His methods, often collaborative and always meticulous, reflect a blend of traditional techniques and modern approaches, underscoring his adaptability in the ever-evolving field of entomology.

His commitment to education and public outreach is evident in his efforts to demystify the complex world of insects for a broader audience. He has presented many online webinars and has given public talks in libraries all over Wicklow.
